As someone who grew up politically during the Iraq war saga, it really amazes me there's not more widespread opposition to the current war on Iran, which is astronomically expensive and destructive, and demonstrably unpopular. We’re talking about millions of people displaced! Global supply chains and economies destroyed! Thousands killed! It used to be a trope that the craziest warmongers in the U.S. wanted to “bomb Iran” but I once felt that it could never happen. Yet here we are and it kind of feels like the American public sleepwalked into it or simply just isn’t interested. There was MASSIVE public debate about Vietnam, Iraq, Ukraine, and Gaza, but seemingly very little on Iran. It’s like the most digital we get, the more desensitized to war we become, even though it has become much easier to actually see what is going on

It boggles my mind that so many people are so sympathetic to psycho goat fucking child molesting terrorists. 🤷‍♂️ My Iranian friend is thrilled that his dictator was dethroned.

The dictatorship is awful but so far all we did was replace him with his ostensibly worse son

If you own the media, you can control which news gets highlights and which don't. Wars, in my believes, serve multiple purposes. Namingly, wealth transfer, depopulation, regime changes, more control and others. I believe we got to the point where people understand as it is so obvious as they nomore care to even hide it. They just don't care about what people want, they want obedience and control. After they achieve their goals they will make it look like they care about the people again. And the loop will continue. If we cannot change the current system, we should participate in building a parallel one for us.

Some of the biggest protests in US history were against the war on terror and there was no resulting benefit. A lot of the anger wound up electing Trump and now here we are again. Protests don't seem to have any impact, only changing our personal actions and pursuing political vengeance seems to deliver anything resembling change at this moment.

I wouldn’t say the protests had no impact The war played some role in people electing Obama as an ostensible anti war candidate

Oh gee I don't know... .maybe letting the Ayatollah develop nukes not such a great idea? Given that all schoolkids in Iran are made daily to chant that the US is the great satan and Israel is the little satan? That probably won't end well? Anna Iran selling all its oil for cheap to China while China gives them supersonic missiles and ballistic missiles?

To protest used to be to vote but most people recognize voting doesn’t mean what it used to. And even protesting doesn’t mean what it used to. The only option is to opt out of the money that enables it. Those who aren’t familiar with opting out yet, bury their heads because they’re exhausted.

The desensitization point is real, but I think there's a structural reason the opposition is quieter now: the costs are still abstract for most people. Vietnam had the draft. Iraq had flag-draped coffins on the news. This war's price tag gets absorbed into inflation numbers that feel like background noise. What's strange is we actually have better tools to make fiscal costs legible now. Every dollar spent bombing infrastructure is monetized debt — real purchasing power extracted from everyone holding dollars. That used to require an economist to explain. Now anyone can feel it at the grocery store and trace the line, if they're looking. The opacity isn't technical. It's attentional. And you're right that more digital hasn't meant more aware — it's meant more stimulated and less focused. The information exists. The will to sit with it doesn't.

The desensitization point is real, but I'd add one structural piece: hard money is anti-war infrastructure. States fund endless wars through monetary inflation — the money printer is what makes "we can't afford this" an argument that never lands. When the cost is diffuse and invisible (debasement), the public debate you remember from Vietnam and Iraq becomes optional. Bitcoin doesn't fix the will to war, but it does force honest accounting. Hard to run a years-long campaign when you can't quietly tax the savings of people who never voted for it.

Look at the polling: The majority of Americans oppose the war. They voted for Trump to stop the wars. But the jews want war and what they say actually matters.

All of that Iraq and Afghanistan rage resulted in nothing for us. It isn't not caring, for me I'm computing. Looking for ways to play the game differently. What I've found so far looks very different than before so if you are looking for the old stuff you won't see it.

Lot of apathy, also a lot of us have learned to focus on what we can control, and work within that sphere. Sometimes prayers for the suffering and the dead are all we’ve got. We live in a wicked world.

I think it's easier to understand when you remember that the US lost its independence in 1913. Sad but true.

The desensitization point cuts deep. But I'd add a structural layer: inflation-funded warfare removes the most direct check on war-making — the tax bill. When governments can print money to pay for bombs, the cost is distributed invisibly across everyone's savings rather than appearing as a line on anyone's tax return. Vietnam had a draft and visible tax increases. Iraq had neither — just debt. The more invisible the financing, the less public resistance. Hard money doesn't make war impossible. But it forces the question into the open: are we willing to actually pay for this?

I oppose the bombs but fuck if I think it's a good idea for the IRGC to have nukes. It is not. I will admit that I thought taking out Saddam, Uday and Qusay was probably a good thing overall for humanity. Still do. But the way we tried to be the good guys after that and "fix" Iraq was stupid. So I think a lot of us know a) there is not much we can do b) wait and see.

I protested in the streets during the Iraq war while in college. There were about a dozen of us. It suspected more people would be against it, but was wrong. I get the impression that most Americans believe the bullshit propaganda that programs them to think war is good for the economy. Some people have even told me this. 😔

I know that "all we did" was more of rhetoric than a statement of fact, but the war accomplished far more than that. And if we are being consequentialists like that, then it will take years if not decades to judge whether this war was worth it. And you need to account for externalities too, such as the downstream effect on the terrorism they fund, Russia and China, etc.

You don’t live in the real world man. I’m sorry but the world has always been cruel. You benefit from the American way of life just because of the very country you were born in. The hodlers who work 9-5s are in Fact keeping this thing going. Working in silence for a world we may never get to enjoy. I don’t see you with a hard hat on in Iran plucking dead bodies out of these buildings. You never had a hard day in your life. Get real. A man working a dead end job who’s fearful of the future already feels hopeless. Whining about it isn’t doing anything to change. Focus on what you can control. The things you can’t like Strategic warfare is something you can not. Head down stacking in silence is the only protest many of us have because we have real fucking problems.
