Building new protocol based social media is just the start. Sustaining and growing them is also very hard. Bluesky’s been struggling with declining daily active users over the last year. We see similar struggles in Nostr at a smaller scale.

Nostr is the rebirth of the open web. No algorithms, no gatekeepers, just pure signal. 💜 ❤️

Maybe because social media is mostly stupid and your time should be spent in real life. Maybe we win when every social media platform including nostr has exactly zero users.

I find it hard to keep using NOSTR because it's performance is shite, 2-10x longer load times than X and worse UI. I keep coming back because I believe in it, but as a user it's 🫠

Yeah to solve this i created some radical optimisations on top of nostr, it falls back to standards support, but provides a bunch of indexes and endpoints which are radically faster. http://github.com/divinevideo/divine-funnelcake/

The only solution I can think of is a client like Nitter (xcancel.com) that posts everything on Nostr at the same time as on X. 1. Make a better experience than the official x app 2. Your friends use it 3. Your friends are now all on Nostr 4. No need to post on x anymore? Idk

Yes indeed. It would be hard and we also have somethings to do for it. We need to make it feel like non technical social media for the new users. Here are always some fixed users that are helping to build them and love Nostr. I am sure they won't switch to any other. But we need to protect the new users who are unstable. Mostly they are the ones who used to find new options and were frustrated about existing centralized platforms. Maybe I am wrong at some points. I am talking about majority. If we can make #Nostr a comfortable place for them, we could be more successful and spread Nostr everywhere. From my experience, when I see my feed, there are technical and Bitcoin-related posts around 90%. So my suggestion is let's spread nontechnical content here too. Maybe we can share our personal things, like how we interact with our loved ones and so on. Also, there is another suggestion from me that we could share content about Nostr on other centralized platforms. Then we could make some chats about Nostr to make other people aware of Nostr. Just need to see this to be the most popular social protocol in the world. Let's work for it. 🫂

IMO, I feel like Nostr and Bluesky are struggling for two different reasons - Nostr with minimal exposure and a high barrier to entry, and Bluesky because it got very heavily political captured. I'd bet there'd be a lot to learn on the Nostr side about Bluesky's easyness to join and abstraction of keys (or forgoing them for domain based accounts in some cases).

One of my accounts on bluesky has 12,000 followers but I get almost zero interaction. I think bluesky has a bot problem. Otherwise I don't understand how I can post and not get any interaction at all. At leadt it beats Twitter with all the negative interaction, but I feel alone on that app.
