Oh it happens like twice a year. I go back and forth between Linux and Windows depending on what has angered me.

Try mint. You won’t rage quit. Also you can have windows and Linux with dual boot

It's on my todo list. Tried GUIX for a while for similar reasons and because I am crazy about lambda languages. It was a bit too "pure" to be a general machine for me.

Ragequitting #Linux does not make sense... as there is no one Linux. That's like ragequitting religion when you find out yours is compromised. You can ragequit distros, but there are always others or you can make your own.

I use it on all the damus servers, on my desktop, my personal server, my laptop. They all share the same layered config (L1: base utils, L2: desktop stuff (if laptop/desktop)) and i can just flick a switch to enable desktop packages on non server machines. Its great. Everything tracked in git so all my machines are identical modulo hardware config and small tweaks.

I did this for a while but stopped for some reason. I think home-manager was really angering me or something Big thing was having to wrap GUI programs with NixGL if you were using something like SteamOS or Fedora

How do you get apps on your Linux machine? Whats the experience like - amazing, just works, full of nails on chalkboard?

Enki14d ago
I primarily use apt or flatpack. And unfortunately I do have to use some appimages. Like other people have said, getting apps on your Linux machine is kind of a clusterfuck. And each way of bundling a package has its own ups and downs. For me, though, in general, it just kind of works. There is the occasional problem where something I'm trying to install doesn't have the right dependency, but that seems to be rare in rarer these days. That's for my daily driver. servers are a whole other can of worms 😅

Most of the time I would check the app store for stuff. I think when I was on Linux last it was with Pop OS so I would use the pop shop. I think a couple apps I downloaded outside the store were appimages, but I mostly stuck to the shop

I don't game, so I guess I don't feel like I'm missing much. Also, I'm willing to sacrifice convenience for control of my data. I enjoy learning a little about how computers work and creating scripts. Once you get used to Linux, you get more tuned into open source projects and people's contributions.

I mostly run Mint, so usually just thru the built in software store. If i cant find an app there, i download from the respective website. I'm not super knowledgable with the terminal, so this has worked for me. I'll never go back to Windows or Mac, not ever.

People have different needs, but generally I'd also recommend Fedora (Silverblue) or better, Bluefin, for most new users.

This is kind of superficial, but all the Linux app stores felt janky to me. They'd become unresponsive or slow for no real reason.
0000 sats
elsat14d ago
What happened when you experienced unresponsive app stores?
0000 sats
BaronBurdock14d ago
I'd just quit out and come back. Honestly the app stores weren't my turnoff with Linux. It was always these weird, super specific programs that I'd need that I couldn't get running with WINE.

Hanshan14d ago
always. I ALWAYS end up just installing from the CLI.
0000 sats
Maria200014d ago
No big issues with it, but sometimes the apps on the store are not the latest version of a particular app. Of course, its easy to update later.

Its a fork of Termux terminal app. So, just command line stuff, but if you use the terminal, it's cool to have the same tools available on your phone. Some of my favorites are fzf, buku, newsboat, rsync, and readability-cli (which I use to save web articles and strip out ads and distractions)
