An 80 year old family friend called me for financial advice because her kids wouldn't "help her buy crypto" I'm advising her to buy $100 of Bitcoin on @River, giving her @Lawrence Lepard's The Big Print and telling her that after she reads it I'm happy to help What would you do?

Commandable. I haven't read the big print. But I've given similar advice but put out Lynn Alden's Broken Money.

Send her $5 via River to her email which will let her open her new account with something already in it

My dad called me up 2 days ago to ask if now was a good time to buy bitcoin, he had his bank account closed for some bogus reason, and the new bank offers bitcoin saving plans. I told him everyday is a good day to buy bitcoin, and right now it’s on sale.

I think The Bitcoin Standard would be a good book to read. Once people have made a bitcoin transaction, there is no going back.

Well when we talk self custody it will def be a consideration. Bitkey seems like the move there

Cash app is probably the easiest for a situation like that.

Personally, I'd just have them buy gold since they are 80. I love the sweet corn, but at that age, it's a lot to handle. Gold will treat them well and give them a piece of the action.

If you DM an address, I’ll mail her my book.

River vets everyone who applies using some intrusive KYC database "security" service, and they will deny you an account if you have ever engaged in political wrongthink or gotten on the wrong side of the regime in Washington.

Broken Money is my current go to. Layered Money is decent too and a lot shorter depending on your audience. 80yr old is a special use case - you did well

Why put her in the KYC trap? Just sell her some P2P. If she wants more, sell her more or help her buy P2P from others.

River is good advice because it seems like they are good at hand holding.

I use strike and reccomend river. Strike has new features that are making it much more competitive for a recommendation

People having a good experience with Bitcoin upon my recommendation is something I take super seriously. You put your reputation on the line when you give financial advice. Told her to go check out river and that I would help, but need her to put in some work for us to get anywhere anyway

The big print is better than the Bitcoin Standard for most normies. but Broken Money is my go-to recommendation nowadays! 🚂

That's my goal with wearing Bitcoin on my sleeve. Just want to be the one they come to when they get curious

I’m working on my subtle mentions in every day conversations. The curious will come.

They asked me specifically how to do it so I feel like if I don't help them someone who will steer them into crypto will. Plus I gave her a book by someone who is a gold bug too

I don't think I'm going to get to a point of teaching her about coin control any time soon.
0000 sats
Orange Thoughts107d ago
No need for coin control if she understands the concept of KYC and NoKYC. Usually older folks get it even faster as most of them have dealt with opressive regimes.
